Kjerag mountains, Norway

Kjeragbolten is one of natures wonders and it is certainly one of the most amazing natural motifs. It lies at the end of a strenuous 3-5 hour hike on often muddy terrain. Kjeragbolten is a big rock that has fallen into a crack in the mountain and there it has been wedged into the crack. The rock is located about 1000 meter above the fjord.

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

Mon State, Myanmar

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, a Golden Rock, is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar.
It is about 15 feet high, and is situated on the hill of the same name on the ridge between Sittaung and Thanlwin. The pagoda is said to have been built during the life-time of the Buddha over 2400 years ago by two Burmese spirits. The pagoda is believed to contain a hair of the Buddha.
It has been reported that a thread can be passed under the base. Some believe that this is evidence that the boulder does not touch the base, but floats above it, in part due to its holy nature.
Women are not allowed to touch the boulder, and to be within proximity of the pagoda.

Split Apple Rock

Abel Tasman

Split Apple Rock in the Abel Tasman, the South Island of New Zealand, is a popular sightseeing destination. It is also a favoured sunning spot for seabirds.

Meoto Iwa

Futami

Meoto Iwa, the “Wedded Rocks”, are two sacred rocks in the ocean near Futami. These rocks represent husband and wife and are joined by a heavy rope of rice straw, which weighs over a ton and is 35m long, and must be replaced several times a year in a special ceremony. The rope was attached to the rocks about 650 years ago. The rocks symbolize the union of creator gods Izanagi and Izanami. The rocks therefore celebrate the union in marriage of man and woman. The larger rock, said to be male, is 9m high and 39.6m around. The Wife Rock is 4m tall and 9m around. The distance between the rocks is 9m.

The best time to see the rocks is at dawn during the summer, when the sun appears to rise between them.

Rock City

Minneapolis, Kansas

Rock City is a tiny park which contains about 200 huge Dakota sandstone concretions. The spheres are up to 27 feet in diameter. Rock City has been made a registered Natural Landmark.

Balance Rock

Queen Charlotte Island

Balance Rock is a 2-metre widebolder left behind from the glacial retreat of the ice age.
Some people refer to Balance Rock as the centre of spirituality. It is one of the many natural spiritual forces at work on Haida Gwaii. The best time to view the rock is at low tide.

Balanced formations in Garden of the Gods. Arches National Park, USA

Kansas

Mushroom Rock State Park contains mushroom rock formations in the Smoky Hills region of Kansas. They were formed by the erosion of a harder rock on top of a softer rock. The rock contains Dakota Sandstone. There are two mushrooms and a giant shoe rock, as well as numerous other rock formations.

Mushroom Rock in Egypt

Mirny diamond mine, Siberia

Looking at photos like these scares and fascinates in equal doses. The sheer scale of these holes reminds you of just how tiny you are. It’s an absolute beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mine in the world. At 525 meters deep with a top diameter of 1200 meters there’s even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a few helicopters being sucked in.

The red arrow in the photo below is pointing to a huge truck.

Kimberley big hole – South Africa

Apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097 meters deep mine yielded over 3 tonnes of diamonds before being closed in 1914.

The amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to total 22.5 million tonnes.

Glory Hole – Monticello Dam

Glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be drained from the reservoir.

This is the glory hole belonging to Monticello dam in California and it’s the largest in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14′400 cubic feet of water every second.

The hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above. If you were to jump in for some reason your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of the dam.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size constantly. in its current state the hole is 3/4 mile deep and 2.5 miles wide.

Great Blue Hole, Belize

Situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize is this incredible ‘geographical phenomenon’ known as a blue hole. There are numerous blue holes around the world but none as stunning as this one.

At surface level the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide, the depth in the middle reaching 145 meters. Obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers.

Diavik Mine, Canada

This incredible mine can be found 300km northeast of Yellowknife in Canada.

The mine is so huge and the area so remote that it even has its own airport with a runway large enough to accommodate a Boeing 737. It also looks equally as cool when the surrounding water is frozen.

Sinkhole, Guatemala

A sinkhole is caused when water (usually rainwater or sewage) is soaked up by the earth on a large scale, resulting in the ground collapsing.

These photos are of a sinkhole which occurred early this year in Guatemala. the hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

Officials blamed the monster of a hole on a ruptured sewage pipe.
