Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

 Kyaikhtiyo pagoda3

Mon State, Myanmar

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, a Golden Rock, is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar.
It is about 15 feet high, and is situated on the hill of the same name on the ridge between Sittaung and Thanlwin. The pagoda is said to have been built during the life-time of the Buddha over 2400 years ago by two Burmese spirits. The pagoda is believed to contain a hair of the Buddha.
It has been reported that a thread can be passed under the base. Some believe that this is evidence that the boulder does not touch the base, but floats above it, in part due to its holy nature.
Women are not allowed to touch the boulder, and to be within proximity of the pagoda.

Futami

Meoto Iwa, the “Wedded Rocks”, are two sacred rocks in the ocean near Futami. These rocks represent husband and wife and are joined by a heavy rope of rice straw, which weighs over a ton and is 35m long, and must be replaced several times a year in a special ceremony. The rope was attached to the rocks about 650 years ago. The rocks symbolize the union of creator gods Izanagi and Izanami. The rocks therefore celebrate the union in marriage of man and woman.  The larger rock, said to be male, is 9m high and 39.6m around. The Wife Rock is 4m tall and 9m around. The distance between the rocks is 9m.

The best time to see the rocks is at dawn during the summer, when the sun appears to rise between them.
